In theory, both accidental and deliberate overwrites were now prevented. Once the firmware had booted up, it enabled various hardware lockout mechanisms so that from OS X, or any other operating system, you couldn’t change anything. The cryptographic key used to verify the digital signature was stored, of course, in the firmware. Digital signaturesĪpple and many other motherboard manufacturers eventually went one step further, and organised things so that the firmware chip could only be updated by code already contained in the firmware.įor additional security (and control), firmware updates would only go ahead if the new firmware version was digitally signed by the motherboard vendor. In other words, only by using special hardware configuration settings could the firmware be updated, which prevented accidental overwrites. (They’re still commonly called “Boot ROMs,” but they are no longer truly read-only.) To fix bugs, you had to extract the chip and replace it with a new one – a troublesome task on a single computer, let alone in an office full of them.įor convenience, therefore, Boot ROMs were ultimately replaced by Flash chips that were usually write-protected, but could be rewritten under controlled conditions. So, Boot ROMs couldn’t be infected with malicious code, which was very handy but they couldn’t be updated or patched, either. In the early days, computer firmware was stored in a special Boot ROM chip – a read-only memory device that was programmed in the factory, plugged into your computer, and remained forever unmodified and unmodifiable. To explain: the firmware is a sort-of hardware-level operating system, stored in a special chip on the motherboard, that prepares your computer for running a regular operating system such as OS X or Windows. The sequel builds on work reported at the start of 2015 that used security holes in the firmware on your Mac to inject malicious code into the very earliest part of the boot process, where it can run long before OS X itself. ![]() ![]() The administration’s response over the course of a year had included asking Mallory to hug the girls who bullied her, and removing her from classes, instead of taking action against the bullies, the family alleges. The school’s response, according to the Grossmans, was devastatingly insufficient, in effect leaving Mallory to believe the only way to escape the harassment was to end her life.Īlthough it was other students, not the administrators, who made Mallory miserable, the school had a responsibility to protect Mallory from the bullying and failed, according to the lawsuit the Grossmans filed last month. On the day of Mallory's suicide, she and her mother met with administrators about the girls who had been taunting Mallory in person and online. While Mallory died at her own hands, her parents believe she wouldn't have killed herself if it wasn't for the incessant bullying she had faced in school for more than a year, and what the Grossmans say was the school district's ineffectual response to their pleas for help. That’s how you’re going to make this stop,” Grossman said. That doesn’t deter Dianne Grossman, Mallory’s mother, who has started a nonprofit to combat bullying in her daughter’s memory, and believes that litigation is one way to combat the nation’s rising suicide rate. Such lawsuits are challenging because of the fundamental fact of suicide: the deceased took his or her own life, which is why, in many religious traditions, suicide was long considered a sin.Īaron Thorup, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Among the people who have filed lawsuits over suicides this year are a widow who is suing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for not better securing the George Washington Bridge, and grieving parents who say the University of Pennsylvania didn’t do enough to help their daughter, who told counselors she was thinking about suicide. The Grossmans are not alone in their quest for accountability. That’s a question now making its way through the judicial system of New Jersey, as Mallory’s parents seek to hold a school district responsible for their daughter’s death, saying administrators didn’t do enough to protect the sixth-grader from merciless bullying. As my colleagues have noted, you need just one pump for your whole face, and it has a thick, paintlike texture. This is a long wear, full-coverage matte foundation (I’m Shade 5 Warm) that makes your skin look like you’re a fancy cyborg worthy of being sent out in Westworld. If you want your skin to have the perfection of an airbrushed doll, this is for you. The friend I was eating with stopped me mid-bite to say: “Your skin is luminous.” After eight hours of wear! The best part: I wore this stuff to a full day of work, to an event, and dinner after, and I only touched up my concealer. I used a foundation brush to pat it on and warmed up my forehead and jawline with a Fenty bronzer. It stayed put during a random heatwave and didn’t oxidize after a full day of wear. It really did keep my skin hydrated! Sometimes, because I exfoliate a lot, I get a few flakes mid-day, but that was never a problem with this foundation. Still, it goes on light, and I only needed one pump of product. I tried using the minimal amount that I typically wear, but it looked better when I put a little more on. It’s definitely for fuller-coverage days. This Charlotte Tilbury foundation was a great color match (I used 9 Warm) and I’ve added it to my rotation. I’ve always had trouble matching a foundation to my skin tone, so when I find something good, I try to stick with it as long as possible. Maybe somewhere around 50 percent … and for my non-millennial skin, any extra hydration is appreciated. Does it make my skin feel 216 percent more hydrated? No. The only bummer is that it’s not clean. I’ve been trying to use only green and sustainable foundations, so I will probably save this for important days, like when I have presentations or grown-up things like that, because it definitely makes me feel more polished. Its ability to even out my tone, dispel all red blotches, diminish dark spots and make me look less tired is pretty darn impressive. The amount of foundation that travels to the insides of my eyeglass frames proves just how opaque this stuff is, but I just carry an extra chamois in my glass case. In any event, my shade, Neutral 3, blends kind of perfectly into my skin while covering its flaws in a veil of youth. I’m so stunned by how great this foundation makes my skin look, I feel like not calling it “magic” is a missed opportunity. If I had to wear a foundation, I’d probably end up going with something that’s already sheer and more glowy, like the Armani Luminous Silk one we tried.Ĭharlotte Tilbury likes to use the word “magic” in her products (Magic Cream, Magic Vanish, Magic Away). I later tried a more minimal application (pictured) which felt a little more wearable, but as a foundation-phobe who doesn’t really like being matte, this was still a bit much for me. And when it came time to remove my makeup, there was a lot left on my face, leading me to believe this really “stays all day and night” as the bottle proclaims. ![]() It has a refreshing cooling effect and a skin-care-like scent. A professional make-up artist matched me to a shade called 9 Cool and applied it to my face, and the only way I could describe the result was “a member of a wedding party about to take a bunch of pictures outside.” Which is great if that’s what you’re going for! If you want airbrushed, this will get you airbrushed. I’ve disclosed it once, I’ll disclose it again: I still don’t wear foundation, so trying a full-coverage matte one was a journey. ![]() ![]() The Europa Clipper mission included ice-penetrating radar, the same type of instrument used to study the features in Greenland. The motivation behind the mission is to understand whether Europa can sustain life. He’s a science team member for the Europa Clipper, which NASA plans to launch in 2024. Schroeder’s work will continue with a new mission. ![]() After spotting the commonality between Europa and Greenland, the team spent months trying to understand how the ridges formed in Greenland to help explain what was happening on Europa. student researching the effects of warming events on the surface of Greenland was looking at radar data and saw the double ridges on the island. “That’s hopeful news for that to be a potentially habitable piece of water.”įor Schroeder, the discovery was also a reminder of the joy and value of advising research groups: One of his postdoc researchers studying Europa gave a talk and showed parts of the moon that scientists can’t explain. “Forming these ridges brings water closer to the surface, and that increases the chance that you'll have an opportunity for exchange to get those chemicals into the water,” Schroeder says. These chemicals reach the surface of the ice shell, which blocks the chemicals from reaching the liquid water below, Schroeder says. If combined with water, chemicals from space and nearby moons like Io could make Europa habitable. But the ocean is separated from the surface by the thick ice shell. Underneath Europa’s ice shell lies a global ocean, and evidence suggests it has more liquid water than the Earth. “If the same process covers the formation of the double ridges on Europa, then there would be pockets of water underneath these ridges all over Europa,” Schroeder says, “suggesting that water may be much more abundant in the middle of the ice shelf than we would have thought.” In Greenland, the ridges were formed by refrozen pockets of water, he says. His research group, which studies both Europa and Earth’s ice sheets using radar, discovered similar features on the surface of Greenland. The surface of Europa, some 390 million miles away, shows “striking double ridge features” that are symmetric on both sides, with a trough in the middle, says Stanford University geophysics professor Dustin Schroeder.
